Directions to Old Job, Vermont

Brackets around old directions that may be obsolete, or may add details that we missed because we came from a different direction. The notation @d, where d is a decimal number, denotes a distance in miles. These are not as exact as they seem, there are no tenths of miles on the odometer we used. Please send updates and corrections if you go there.

From south-west: If you are coming north on VT Rt.7: Follow your map to Manchester VT. From there go 13 miles north on Rte. 7 to Danby VT.

[ You will see an antique store on your right and then a lumber yard immediately after the store. There will be a sign for Danby and Mt. Tabor after the lumber yard. ]

We didn't see a lumber yard, at the corner was a brown building with no markings and next to that a Crosby True Value Hardware. No matter, there seems to be only one place in town where you can go east.

Turn right or east toward Mt. Tabor. You are now on Brooklyn Rd. also called FS-10. Check the odometer and call this @0.0.

Hairpin turns and climbing. Big Branch Picnic Area @2.5. AppleChain Trail @3.0. FS-60 on left (north) @4.6. FS-322 on right (south) @4.8. FS31 @6.2.

After about 6.6 miles on FS-10, just the other side of a small bridge is FS30, bear right (South). Of course from the other direction it is a sharp left. FS-301 @8.0. Old Job trail head @8.8. (about 2.3 miles from the start of FS-30.)

From north-west: If you are coming south on Rt-7, you probably know where you are and can change the above directions to avoid actually driving the 26 miles from Danby to Manchester and back.

From east: It is possible to get there through winding back roads, but it may be best to take VT-9 from Brattleboro to Bennington, and then go north on VT-7, following the directions above from south-west. VT-9 is exit 2 off I-91. If VT-9 is too far south, take exit 7 from I-91 and head toward Springfield. Take VT-11 west all the way to VT-7, and then follow the directions from the south-west.

If you want to try the back roads (mostly not that bad, but they have multiple names and are not well marked) Take exit 7 from I-91 and head toward Springfield. Take VT-11 west approx. 20 miles until you enter the green mountains national forest. About 2 or 3 miles after crossing VT-100 in Londonderry turn right onto Ridge Road (if you get to Landgrove town center or Peru you have gone too far).
(Maybe you would rather go all the way through to VT-7 than go back to look for Ridge Rd.)
Go 1.6 miles on Ridge Road.
Turn left onto Landgrove Road, go 0.3 miles.
Take 2nd left to stay on Landgrove, go 1.2 miles.
Slight left onto Little Michigan Rd, go 0.4 miles.
Take (2nd?) right onto Danby Mountain Tabor Rd, also called FS-10.
Go 5 to 6 miles total on FS-10, then take a sharp left onto FS-30.

The walk into Old Job

At the trailhead, there is parking for dozens. Since it is probably full, park along FS-30 on one side of the road. Have all wheels off the pavement so that big emergency vehicles can get through.

From the trailhead at the end of FS-30 go to the right about a mile north downstream to the Old Job site. That's about a 20 minute walk. The trail is narrow in a few places so that a cart or wheelchair would have to be carried. If you can take your stuff in a backpack, that might work better.

FS-322 (mentioned above) is a backdoor. Handicapped parking and kitchen equipment could go here. On the other hand, you might not even find your way in from there. You will have to cross a stream to get to the main gathering area.

Please beware that there are many archaeologically significant relics at this sites and some of these areas will be roped off. Please do not camp in these areas and respect our heritage.
